One of these movements was the Nation of Islam, which is a Black-focused offshoot of Islam that was founded in Michigan in 1930 and is separate from mainstream Islam. In 1947, shortly after the founder of the Nation of Islam, Elijah Muhammad, was released from incarceration, the city of Baltimore saw the establishment of a mosque affiliated with the Nation of Islam.
